Swami Ramdas, who was known as Vittal Rao during his pre-Sannyas days, was leading an ordinary life till God's grace descended on him in or about the year 1920. Then he was made to think deeply about the futility of worldly pursuits and the absolute necessity of taking to the divine path for realizing one's identity with the Supreme Being, as a result of which alone one can get 'Peace-eternal.' He placed himself totally at the altar of God. At this time his father initiated him with the holy and all-powerful Ram Mantra. Prompting came from within to renounce the worldly life and he took to a wandering mendicant's life. Intense aspiration coupled with earnest practice to attain the Highest quickened his spiritual progress and in a short time, he had the vision of his Beloved – God – everywhere, within and without. The result was unending Bliss. Having thus attained the supreme goal of life, he started on his mission to guide and serve mankind, to awaken it to the awareness of God, by founding Anandashram. Innumerable persons in India and abroad took advantage of his most enlivening and inspiring presence till he dropped his mortal coil in 1963.
Forget not the central truth that God is seated in your own heart. Don’t be disheartened by failures at the initial stages. Cultivate the spirit of surrender to the workings of His will in you and outside you until you have completely surrendered up your ego-sense, and have known He is in all and He is all, and you and He are one.
Swami Ramdas FoundationBeloved Papa envisaged Anandashram as a centre where from the greatness of God's name would ring out and spread in all directions. ‘This will be an abode of purity, love, peace and bliss. All Sadhakas and devotees will have a free resort to this consecrated spot; and the basis of activity in it will be universal love and service.’ Anandashram, though not a missionary organisation, carries out the mission entrusted to it by the Founder Saint whose message to everyone, especially to those who would come to this spiritual centre, is clear and simple: spirituality is expansion from the individual to the universal - from ‘me’ (self-centredness) to ‘we’ (self-lessness). “If you want peace for yourself and others in the world, adjust your conduct in accordance with the law of Love. Expand your vision so that it can embrace all fellow-beings and link them to yourself by Love. Rise above narrow creeds, cults, communal leanings and national ambitions. Merge your life in the infinity of God!" This spiritual centre offers every kind of facility for the spiritual regeneration of the soul so that it may realise its pristine Divine nature. To this end, all service and activities of the Ashram are carried out.
